1957 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

1957 WDDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the 1957 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The wheat ears and stems on both sides show extra thickness and a spread toward the center, and E PLURIBUS UNUM and the dots show extra thickness. Obverse Stage A has parallel NNW-SSE scratches beside the lips and chin, on their right, a horizontal scratch just under the chin, and many other scratches across the obverse. Stage B comes from a new obverse die, with a short gouge heading SW from the lower right of WE's W and many light scratches across the obverse. Stage C adds a chip inside the top of the date's 5. On the reverse, Stage A has a scratch heading SSE from the lower right of PLURIBUS' second U, SW-NE scratches inside CENT's C, and many other scratches across the reverse. On Stage B these are much weaker, and Stage C is the same as Stage B. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A, Whaden Curtis Stage B and Cliff Reuter Stage C. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
