1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018

Description

Sharing nearly identical die markers with the closely numbered WDDR-019, WDDR-018 for the 1957 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits extra thickness and a spread towards the center on both wheat ears and stems, along with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the separator dots. The obverse carries a die scratch running SW/NE to the right of the N in IN and a short die gouge extending SW from the bottom right of the W in WE. The reverse displays a die scratch running NNW/SSE between the upper E and N in CENT. While the die marker descriptions may appear similar to neighboring catalog entries, each WDDR number represents a distinct working die with its own unique hub doubling event — the similar marker patterns suggest these dies may have been manufactured in close sequence and received similar handling during the die preparation process. The 1957 date was the second-to-last year of the Wheat Cent design, with Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse scheduled to debut in 1959.
