1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015
Error
Description
Struck as a proof during the final year of Wheat Cent proof production, this 1957 WDDR-015 displays strong Class II spread towards the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flanking dots, and both wheat ears with stems. The spread decreases slightly from left to right, a directional gradient that helps distinguish this variety from other DDRs. Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling produces a tight secondary image from slight distortion during hubbing. A definitive die marker anchors attribution: a short, strong, vertical die gouge to the right of the center of the E in EPU. As a proof coin struck on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, the doubling appears exceptionally sharp. The 1957 proof year holds special significance as the last year proof Lincoln Cents carried the wheat ear reverse that graced the denomination since 1909 — beginning in 1959, the Memorial reverse replaced it. Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDR-015 combines strong Class II spread with proof-quality sharpness on the final Wheat Cent proof year.
