Description

Twelfth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1957 Lincoln wheat cent, DDR-012 exhibits medium spread on the upper left wheat ear and the letters E P of E PLURIBUS with the spread decreasing from left to right — a diagnostic pattern characteristic of rotational hub displacement where the pivot point lies to the right of the affected area. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1907 and DMR-020, documenting three die stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both reverse and obverse have progressed to late die state (LDS). The confirmed LDS for Stage C indicates specimens exist showing advanced die wear, including potentially softened design details and possible late-stage die cracks. The comments identify this as a proof striking, placing it among the limited proof cent production at Philadelphia during 1957. Philadelphia produced proof Lincoln cents for inclusion in annual proof sets, using polished dies and specially prepared planchets to achieve the mirror-field finish expected by collectors.
