1957-D Type II Counter Clash CCLTII-1C-1957D-01

Description

CCL(TII)-1c-1957D-01 The above images show what appears to be an extra “E” above and to the right of the E in LIBERTY. The vertical bar of the extra “E” is the most prominent feature of this anomaly, with the top and lower horizontal bars showing clearly. The middle bar of the extra “E” is faintly seen as it emerges from the vertical bar. Exactly why the middle bar is so faint is not known and does cast some doubt that this is in fact a Type II counterclash. This coin is in the collection of Bob Piazza. However, the overlays provided below show an exact fit of an E over an E. The first overlay shows a transparent E over the anomaly. The second overlay shows a opaque E over the anomaly. This die can be recognized by the heavy, vertical, long die scratches through the E, T and Y of LIBERTY. These die scratches may indicate that the mint tried to remove this anomaly. The above image is of the obverse of that Lincoln cent found with the Type II counterclash.
