1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Type II Counter Clash CCLTII-1C-1957D-01

Description

CCL(TII)-1c-1957D-01 is a Type II counter clash on a 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. What looks like an extra E sits up and to the right of LIBERTY's E. Its vertical bar stands out most, and its top and bottom horizontal bars are clear, but the middle bar shows only faintly where it leaves the vertical bar. No one knows why the middle bar is so weak, and that leaves some doubt that this is truly a Type II counterclash. Even so, MDC's overlays show an E laid over the anomaly matching it exactly, one with a transparent E and one with an opaque E. The die can be recognized by heavy, long, vertical die scratches through LIBERTY's E, T and Y, which may show that the Mint tried to remove the anomaly.
