1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

1957-D WDDO-013 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. An extra eyelid sits SE of the main one. Obverse Stage A has two strong parallel scratches heading NE from the top of LIBERTY's Y; a scratch heading NE from the top of the 5; many SW-NE scratches ahead of and behind the bust; and abrasion doubling along the front of the neck and bow tie. On Stage B the scratch from the 5 is very weak, a die chip fills the top of the 9, and a crack heads NW and then west from the eyebrow. On the reverse, Stage A has a short, strong scratch heading SSW from the top of PLURIBUS' L; a distorted upper right on CENT's N, from abrasion to remove clash marks; a long scratch heading SW to the top left of CENT's C, starting at the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM; and a strong scratch heading SE from the bottom of UNUM's second U to the right wheat ear's top. On Stage B the Stage A scratches are gone; new are a short, curving gouge under UNUM's M, a SE-NW scratch above STATES' second T, and a strong scratch heading SE from the lower right of UNITED's N to the top left of OF's F.
