1957 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

1957-D WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY's letters are spread to the west, while the 19 of the date is spread to the east. The obverse also has a repunched mint mark, a D/D Tilted Rotated, which Wexler's RPM files number 1957-D 1¢ WRPM-095. Obverse Stage A has parallel scratches heading NE from the bow tie, at its top and bottom, and a gouge (dot) in the field right of the eye that Wexler sees on every stage. On Stage B the Stage A scratches are gone, and many SW/NE scratches run left and right of the bust; Stage C is the same as Stage B. Stage D adds remnants of a die clash left of the back of the neck and a small gouge above the right side of LIBERTY's E. Stage E adds a NW/SE crack crossing the upper arm on its left side. On the reverse, Stage A has a strong finger-feeder gouge heading SSE from between the left dot and PLURIBUS' P; a long scratch running south from the top left of CENT's T to STATES' A; and other scratches across the reverse. On Stage B these are very weak; clash marks show between the lower parts of CENT's C and E and also join ONE's E to CENT's N; NW/SE scratches run between CENT's C and E; one scratch runs from UNUM's first U through ONE's E, another from UNUM's second U to the top of CENT's T, and a third curves SSE from UNUM's M, passing left of the right wheat ear. On Stage C most of the scratches between CENT's C and E now run SW/NE, and many SW/NE scratches cover the left half of the reverse. Stage D has many NNW/SSE scratches right of ONE's E and CENT's T; a scratch heading SSW from the top of STATES' second T through AMERICA's C; and a small gouge just SE of the lower right of UNITED's N. Stage E comes from a new reverse die, with a N/S scratch halfway between the upper left wheat ear and CENT's C and a small gouge under UNUM's N. Brian Ribar submitted Stage A, John A. Wexler Stages B, D and E, and James C. Moreland Stage C. CONECA lists it as 11-O-IV+VIII and Coppercoins as 1957D-1DO-006. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
