1956 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1956 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1956 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, both dots, both upper wheat ears and both stems show strong extra thickness. Obverse Stage A has a long scratch running north from the top left of LIBERTY's R to IN's N; two nearly parallel scratches running south from the bottom of LIBERTY's E; a SW-NE scratch between the lower parts of the date's 1 and 9; and a short west-east scratch between the tops of the 9 and 5. Stage B is a late die state (LDS), and none of the Stage A scratches can be seen. Reverse Stage A has parallel SSW-NNE scratches between PLURIBUS' R and I; a scratch heading SW from the bottom of PLURIBUS' S; a strong gouge (dot) just above the A of STATES; a gouge below AMERICA's M and E, between them; a scratch heading SW from the lower left of STATES' first S; and a scratch heading NE from the upper right of AMERICA's first A to UNITED's D. Stage B is also a late die state: the scratches between the R and I are weaker but visible, most other Stage A scratches are gone, and both gouges remain. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 7-R-VI and Coppercoins as 1956P-1DR-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
