1955 Proof Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1955 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1955 proof Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong spread toward the center appears on QUARTER and on the branch and leaves over QUARTER, and slightly on the right branch end and the DO of DOLLAR. On the obverse, over the D in GOD there is a small gouge (dot). On the reverse, the I and C in AMERICA have a gouge between their tops. Tony Russo submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments suggest that the strong but narrow reach of the doubling points to a tilted hub during one of the last hubbings. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
