Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1955 Proof Washington Quarter WDDR-002 displays a strong spread toward the center on QUARTER, the branch and leaves above QUARTER, and slightly on the DO of DOLLAR and the right branch end. The strong but limited scope of the doubling suggests a tilted hub on one of the final hubbings — an expert assessment that points toward a possible Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) attribution, where the hub contacted the die at a slight angle rather than perfectly parallel, creating doubling that is pronounced in one area and diminishes across the die face. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears as a dot above the D in GOD. The reverse carries a die gouge between the tops of the I and C in AMERICA. These die markers serve as secondary confirmation points for attribution beyond the doubling characteristics. Proof coins from 1955 were struck with specially prepared dies on polished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, and doubled die varieties on proof coinage are particularly prized because the mirror-like fields provide exceptional contrast for viewing secondary hub impressions. Attributed under the designation 1955 25 cent Pr WDDR-002, collectors should examine QUARTER and the branch above it for the centerward spread, then check the die gouge dot above D in GOD and the gouge between I and C in AMERICA for confirmation.
