1955 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015
ErrorDescription
Proof Jefferson Nickels of the 1950s attract variety hunters because mirror-like fields make even subtle doubling apparent, and WDDR-015 of the 1955 Proof delivers Class II distorted hub doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class II doubling occurs when the hub distorts between impressions during die-sinking, and the close spread produces a shelf-like effect best observed under magnification against the reflective proof surface. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 1955 WDDR-015 Proof, this variety carries dual expert references. Obverse die markers include a large die dot below Jefferson's eye, a prominent feature aiding rapid identification before examining the subtler reverse doubling. The reverse carries a short slanted die scratch right of the right arch of Monticello as a confirming diagnostic. Proof production at Philadelphia during the 1950s supplied collector sets with coins struck from specially prepared dies, and surviving doubled dies on proof issues are both scarcer and more collectible than business-strike counterparts. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel.
