1955 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
ErrorDescription
Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, this proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-008 exhibits strong combined Class II and Class V doubling showing on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with closer doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Attributed by John A. Wexler, the dual-class mechanism produces a distinctive combination of distorted and pivoted hub effects on the reverse legends. No significant obverse markers have been noted. Reverse die markers include a die dot to the right of the N of MONTICELLO, two die scratches to the upper left of the small left window, a die gouge to the upper right of the small left window, and a die dot above the right porch. The "Best Of" designation signals this variety's recognized prominence among Jefferson Nickel doubled dies, and the strong doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM serves as the primary pickup point on this proof issue.
