Description

Exhibiting Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the proof Jefferson Nickel, the 1955 WDDR-012 shows strong doubling on STATES OF AMERICA that increases in intensity from left to right across the inscription. Closer doubling appears on FIVE CENTS, the LLO of MONTICELLO, and UNUM, while strong doubling also affects the right side of the Monticello building facade. This proof strike variety demonstrates how distorted hub doubling warps the die surface progressively, creating a gradient of displacement across the reverse design. Die markers on the obverse include a series of die dots scattered through Jefferson's hair. On the reverse, a series of slanted die scratches sit inside the right arch, accompanied by a die dot positioned to the upper right of the R of PLURIBUS. The leftward-increasing pattern of the doubling on STATES OF AMERICA provides a reliable pickup point for collectors examining proof Jefferson nickels from 1955, a year already notable among variety enthusiasts.
