Description
As the primary doubled die for the 1954 Proof Franklin Half Dollar, DDO-001 carries the FS-101 designation confirming its premier status among varieties for this date. Medium spread and extra thickness appear on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the digits 954 of the date, creating a multi-element variety visible across the upper obverse. The medium-strength spread on proof surfaces is particularly appealing because the mirror-like fields provide maximum contrast for observing displaced design elements. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-252 and DMR-003, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state awaits confirmation. Proof Franklin Half Dollars were struck exclusively at Philadelphia from specially prepared dies for annual proof sets, and proof doubled dies are inherently scarcer because proof production runs are far smaller than business-strike runs. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams, this proof Franklin Half Dollar combines FS-101 recognition with medium spread across motto, legend, and date on mirror-like proof surfaces.
