Description

Proof Jefferson Nickels of the mid-1950s seldom attract the die variety attention lavished on their cent and half dollar counterparts, making DDR-002 a noteworthy exception. This doubled die reverse exhibits strong doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM paired with medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, both increasing in intensity from left to right and culminating in triple impressions on UNUM and AMERICA. The progressive left-to-right escalation is characteristic of a rotational hub misalignment, where the secondary impression diverges more markedly at greater distances from the pivot axis. Cataloged as UVC-890 and DMR-005, this proof-only variety was struck at Philadelphia on specially polished planchets, and the reflective fields enhance the doubling's visibility under magnification.
