Holding the primary DDR catalog position for the 1954 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, DDR-001 delivers strong spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — the two principal inscriptions flanking Monticello on Felix Schlag's reverse. A distinctive directional gradient characterizes this variety: spread increases from left to right, meaning the leftmost letters show less displacement than the rightmost, consistent with pivoted hub doubling where the rotation axis sits left of center. The strong intensity indicates clearly separated primary and secondary impressions visible at relatively low magnification, making this among the more accessible DDR varieties for the date. Die markers UVC-889 and DMR-004 confirm the working die. An additional collecting dimension: this variety can be found in original 1954 Mint Sets, offering examples in superior preservation with original government packaging. The 1954 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel). Target the rightmost letters of both inscriptions under 5x magnification, where the left-to-right gradient produces maximum displacement.
