1953-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Catalogued by VarietyVista with permanent die markers UVC-1821 and DMR-038, this 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse doubled die shows a graduated spread across the reverse. Medium extra thickness develops on E PLURIBUS and the left wheat stalk, while light extra thickness reaches UNUM and the right wheat stalk — consistent with a distorted hub impression that weakens across the die face. The die passed through three stages. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is mid die state, unconfirmed. Stage C, late die state, is the most marker-rich: a medium die chip in the left wheat stalk lines, a second die chip within the left wheat grains, and die gouges at the back of the bust — all at LDS. San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cents of the early 1950s were struck in bronze with relatively modest mintages compared to Philadelphia production, making variety finds on S-mint issues proportionally noteworthy. DDR-002 is the second catalogued reverse doubling for the 1953-S date.
