1953 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Class VI spread to the center defines this 1953 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-001, with doubling visible on the upper letters of USA, the lower letters of ONE DIME, E PLU, the NUM of UNUM, and the bottom ends of both branches. Class VI (Distended Hub Doubling) occurs when the hub expands or contracts during the impression process, creating a spread pattern that radiates from or converges toward the center of the die. Obverse die markers include numerous light die scratches that crisscross on the face and neck of Roosevelt's portrait. On the reverse, a small die gouge dot can be found below the left side of the second U in UNUM. Cross-referenced as 1953 10¢ Pr WDDR-001, where the Pr designation confirms this as a proof issue, and attributed by the Wexler Team. The proof format's mirror fields and sharp design elements make the Class VI centered spread more readily detectable than it would be on a business strike, as the reflective surfaces provide high contrast that highlights even subtle design displacement.
