Description

DDR-010, which Wexler numbers WDDR-005, is a doubled die reverse on the 1951 proof Franklin half dollar, with a medium spread on the lower bell, the bell lettering, the bell hanger and bands, and the eagle. VarietyVista gives the Cherrypickers number FS-801; Wexler lists no cross-reference. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class II spread toward the center, visible at the left of the bell yoke and the upper bell supports, on the upper bell, along the bell's lower edge, on the letters inside the bell, and on the eagle. On the obverse, three parallel die scratches run SW to NE northwest of the eye, pitting sits at the base of the 9 in the date, and more pitting lies below the back of the eye. On the reverse, several scratches run SSW to NNE across the lower left of the bell, and unusual circular scratches cross their lower portion. Tony Russo submitted the coin. VarietyVista, crediting Tony Russo with the report, adds its reverse design-variety code RDV-001b alongside FS-801. Its marker codes are UVC-280 and DMR-013. Stage A (early) and Stage B (middle) are unconfirmed; at Stage C the reverse is in a late die state, and VarietyVista notes die gouges on the head beneath the E of LIBERTY at that late state.
