1950-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-801 and cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-0738 and die marriage record DMR-004, this 1950 San Francisco Washington quarter displays a medium spread doubled die reverse. The doubling is most prominent on the leaves above the wreath, especially in front of the arrow points, and continues across the arrow points, tail feathers, the eagle's feet and talons, and the eagle's upper head and beak. Four die stages are documented. Stage A in early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state shows numerous north-to-south die scratches on both the reverse and obverse. By Stage C in late-to-mid die state, die cracks have developed from US of PLURIBUS to the wing and from the lower first S of STATES down the eagle's right wing to QU of QUARTER. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. The variety is additionally noted as spanning reverse die varieties RDV-001 and RDV-002.
