1948 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

1948 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1948 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDR-001. Both catalogs cite it as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide; Wexler writes FS-10-1948-801 and notes it was removed in the 6th Edition. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes very strong doubling in a CW rotation on every letter, the flame, the torch holder and the branches with their elements, best seen on the flame. The two hubbings look equally strong, since the letters are extra thick and notched. On the obverse a NW scratch leaves the lower left curve of the 8 of the date, just above the crossbar of the 4, and another heads SE off the 4 at its lower right side. On the reverse a light scratch runs SE from the top right of the M of UNUM to the dot, a long SE scratch leaves the first A of AMERICA at its left lower leg, and a scratch runs NW from the first U of UNUM through the lower acorn to the torch holder. Joe Feld submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-R-I. VarietyVista, also crediting Joe Feld, records a strong spread showing as notches on all the rim lettering, and on the flame tips, stems, leaves and branches. Under its marker codes UVC-172 and DMR-002, stage A (an early die state) and stage C (a late die state) are unconfirmed, and at stage B both sides are in a middle die state.
