1946-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1946-S 1-cent WDDR-002, this doubled die reverse on a 1946-S Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a close Class II spread toward the center on the left wheat ear and wheat kernels. Class II doubling results from a rotational misalignment of the hub during the hubbing process, producing a pivoted spread pattern. The obverse carries a sans serif mint mark and is also an RPM variety listed as 1946-S 1-cent WRPM-010 with an S/S West displacement, making this a multi-variety die pair. Obverse die markers include die scratches running north from the tops of the B and E in LIBERTY, along with numerous north-south die scratches throughout. On the reverse, a north-south die scratch runs through the C of CENT to the top of the N in UNITED, and die scratches run NNW to SSE between the lower RIC of AMERICA, with numerous additional scratches throughout. The 1946-S was among the early postwar Lincoln Wheat Cents from San Francisco, and the combination of doubled die reverse with repunched mint mark on the same die pair elevates this variety's appeal to specialists who pursue multi-attribution coins.
