Description

Combining hub doubling with a distinctive mintmark style, the 1946-S Lincoln Wheat Cent DDR-008 displays medium spread on the lower left wheat ear of Victor David Brenner's reverse while carrying Mintmark Style MMS-004, known as the "trumpet tail" — where the lower terminal of the S mintmark flares outward like the bell of a trumpet rather than tapering to a point. Mintmark styles are classified separately from die varieties because multiple working dies could receive the same hand-punched mintmark punch, making the trumpet tail a shared characteristic across potentially several 1946-S die pairs, while the DDR-008 doubling is unique to this specific working die. Die markers UVC-1747 and DMR-062 identify the variety across three documented stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse reach mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The lower left wheat ear — one of the two parallel wheat stalks framing the inscriptions on Brenner's reverse — is the diagnostic area for the medium doubled contours. Struck in bronze composition at 3.11 grams at the San Francisco Mint. Attributed by VarietyVista. Examine the lower left wheat ear for medium doubling spread, then inspect the S mintmark for the characteristic trumpet-bell flare at its lower tail.
