Description

Light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with a distinctive decreasing left-to-right gradient characterizes this 1946-S Jefferson Nickel DDR-001 — the doubling is strongest on the left side of the inscription and progressively diminishes moving rightward, a pattern indicative of rotational hub doubling from a pivot point on the right side of the die. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-830 with die marriage DMR-010, the variety's confirmed Stage B shows both reverse and obverse at mid die state, with early and late die states unconfirmed. The reverse carries mintmark size variety MMS-004, the Sans Serif variant — a distinctive S mintmark style without the small extending strokes (serifs) at the letter's terminals, distinguishing it from the more common serif S mintmarks. The 1946-S marks the first full year of peacetime Jefferson Nickel production after the wartime silver alloy era (mid-1942 through 1945), returning to standard copper-nickel composition with the small S mintmark in its normal reverse position. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse was in its ninth year. Struck on 75% copper, 25% nickel at 21.2mm. Look for the gradually decreasing spread across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA reading left to right, and note the sans serif S mintmark that adds mintmark variety interest to this DDR.
