Description

After three years of wartime metal substitutions, the 1946 Lincoln Wheat Cent was still struck in the 95% copper, 5% zinc shell-case alloy; the copper-tin-zinc bronze that had defined the series since 1909 returned in 1947. The Denver Mint struck this WDDR-002 doubled die reverse during that first postwar production year, when dies were impressing designs onto copper-zinc planchets, as they had since 1944. Hub doubling that occurred during die production for this transitional year is preserved as visible doubling on the reverse design elements. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1946-D 1¢ WDDR-002. Attributed by the Wexler Team. For variety collectors, the 1946-D issue represents a numismatic watershed, where postwar normalcy resumed and the Denver Mint's massive cent output began generating a fresh population of die varieties.
