1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007
Error
Description
Medium spread on the right edge of the 45 digits combined with extra thickness on the 19 of the date distinguishes DDO-007 on the 1945 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — a late wartime issue struck from the recycled brass shell casing composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista with tracking codes UVC-1667 and DMR-008, three die stages have been documented: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing both obverse and reverse at LDS. The confirmed LDS at Stage C represents the die's final working state, where maximum die deterioration has accumulated and additional secondary die markers may be present. The date doubling pattern — medium spread on the right edge of 45 with extra thickness on 19 — indicates a hub shift that affected the right side of the date more dramatically than the left, consistent with a slight rotational or lateral displacement between hubbing impressions. Philadelphia struck more than one billion cents in 1945 using the wartime brass alloy, and the enormous die consumption rate ensured that multiple hub misalignment events would occur across the production run. Victor David Brenner's date placement on the obverse, positioned below the bust in an open field, makes doubling on the numerals particularly visible against the uncluttered background.
