1945 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1945-01

Cataloged by MadDieClashes, this 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits an atypical misaligned die clash, a specialized form of die clash where the obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet between them while one die is offset or tilted from its normal alignment. Unlike a standard die clash that leaves symmetrically positioned impressions, an atypical clash produces marks at unexpected angles or locations because of the misalignment. On this variety, the clash mark from Lincoln's portrait appears on the reverse, transferring recognizable portrait elements onto the wheat ear side of the coin. Notably, the reverse of this same die also qualifies as a Class 6 doubled die reverse, giving this variety a dual classification that combines two distinct error types on a single die. Discovered by Cliff Reuter, ADC-1C-1945-01 required no tilt or rotation to produce the clash, distinguishing it from rotated clash varieties. The 1945 Philadelphia Cent was struck in the shell-case alloy adopted in 1944 after the previous year's zinc-coated steel composition, returning to a copper-based planchet for the remainder of the Wheat Cent series.
