Description

Denver Mint operations during the closing months of World War II produced the 1945-D Lincoln Wheat Cent at a facility that had been running at sustained wartime capacity since 1942. WDDR-003 preserves the doubled design elements created when the working hub shifted between impressions during die manufacture, embedding overlapping reverse imagery into the die steel. Every cent subsequently struck from this die carried identical doubling — a hallmark of true hub doubling that distinguishes it from less collectible mechanical doubling or die deterioration effects. The 1945-D date holds particular interest because Denver was striking cents from the recycled brass shell casing alloy introduced in 1944 after the zinc-coated steel experiment of 1943, giving these coins a subtly different color and luster compared to pre-war bronze issues.
