Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as 1944-S DDR-003 (3-R-VI), this doubled die reverse shows medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots between its words, and the upper wheat ears. Class VI doubling thickens the design rather than leaving a separate second outline, so the affected letters look heavier than normal. James Wiles reported the variety. VarietyVista records the die pair as UVC-1647 / DMR-015 and has confirmed only Stage C, with both dies in late die state; Stages A and B are unconfirmed. The S mint mark is the straight-serif punch (MMS-005) and sits high. Like every 1944 cent, it was struck in 95% copper and 5% zinc.
