Description

Sharing a die pairing with the independently cataloged DDO-008 and MMS-005, DDR-007 of the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows light spread on E PL of PLURIBUS and the left wheat ear on the reverse. The MMS-005 mintmark style designation indicates straight serifs on the S mintmark, providing an additional attribution diagnostic beyond the doubling itself. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1657 and DMR-025, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse at mid-die state with the obverse DDO-008 also at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state awaits confirmation. The triple cross-listing with DDR-007, DDO-008, and MMS-005 makes it unusually well-documented, as collectors seeking any one variety will find the other two on the same coin. The 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at San Francisco in standard bronze composition after the emergency steel planchets of 1943. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, this triple-variety 1944-S cent documents light reverse doubling on a die independently paired with a doubled die obverse and distinctive straight-serif mintmark.
