Description

Showing strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the wheat ears, the 1944-S DDR-006 Lincoln wheat cent is notable for its unusually detailed die stage documentation spanning four states. Cataloged under UVC-1656 / DMR-024 by VarietyVista, the die progressed from Early Die State (Stage A, unconfirmed) through Early-to-Mid Die State (Stage B, unconfirmed) to Late Die State (Stage C, both reverse and obverse) and finally Very Late Die State (Stage D, both reverse and obverse). The VLDS designation at Stage D indicates extreme die wear — flow lines, softened details, and significant die fatigue — making Stage D specimens visually distinct from earlier impressions. This die's mintmark is listed as MMS-005, characterized by straight serifs and positioned level with the tail of the 9 in the date. The mintmark style provides an additional confirmation point beyond the doubling itself. Strong spread on the wheat ears means the secondary image creates noticeably thickened grain lines on both stalks, while E PLURIBUS UNUM displays clearly separated primary and secondary lettering.
