1944 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Third reverse doubled die documented for the 1944 Lincoln wheat cent, DDR-003 presents light spread on the outside of both wheat ears on Victor David Brenner's reverse design. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1614 and DMR-008, tracking three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse is at mid die state and the obverse is listed as DDO-007 at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B cross-listing is particularly significant: "Obverse is LISTED as DDO-007" confirms that the obverse die paired with this DDR-003 reverse carries its own independent doubled die obverse attribution, creating a dual-variety die marriage where both sides of the coin display hub doubling from separate events during their respective die preparation. Philadelphia struck approximately 1.44 billion cents in 1944, an enormous wartime production figure driven by the insatiable demand for small change during the wartime economy. The 1944 cents were struck on shell-case copper planchets — recycled brass from spent military cartridges — giving them a subtly different composition and color compared to pre-war issues. Light spread on the outside of both wheat ears means the secondary hub impression displaced outward from the center of the reverse, creating a faint secondary outline along the outer edges of the left and right wheat stalks that frame the ONE CENT denomination and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto. The wheat ears' parallel grain lines and smooth curved contours make them sensitive indicators of even light hub doubling, as the regular organic geometry amplifies small displacement. The DDO-007 obverse pairing elevates collecting interest substantially, and collectors should examine both the reverse wheat ear outer edges and the obverse for DDO-007 characteristics at 10-15x magnification to document the complete dual-variety attribution.
