In a normal die clash, the dies make full parallel contact, transferring design elements symmetrically. An atypical clash involves angular or offset contact that produces clash marks in unexpected locations and orientations, creating patterns that do not correspond to the standard mirror-image transfer. The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent holds additional historical significance as a shell casing cent, produced from recycled brass cartridge cases salvaged from military training facilities during World War II.
