Description
This 1943-S Washington quarter features a Doubled Die Obverse (DDO), one of two doubled die obverse varieties known for the 1943 date (the other being the Philadelphia issue). The doubling is visible on the obverse inscriptions and date. As a San Francisco Mint product, this coin is identified by the S mint mark on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers. The 1943-S DDO is a recognized variety with a separate PCGS catalog number and is sought by Washington quarter variety specialists. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3mm diameter, reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Scarce variety. The doubled die obverse is found on a small percentage of the total 1943-S production of 21,700,000 pieces. Actively sought by variety collectors. Premium examples with strong, clear doubling command significantly higher prices than standard issues.
