Description
This 1943 Washington quarter displays a Doubled Die Obverse (DDO), a wartime-era doubled die variety. The doubling is visible on the obverse legends and date, the result of a hubbing error where the working die received a second, slightly misaligned impression. With wartime production pressures demanding enormous quantities of coinage, quality control was sometimes less rigorous, allowing doubled die varieties to enter circulation in greater numbers. This Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mint mark. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3mm diameter, reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Scarce variety. The doubled die obverse is found on a small percentage of the total 1943 production of 99,700,000 pieces. Actively sought by variety collectors. Premium examples with strong, clear doubling command significantly higher prices than standard issues.
