1943-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-008 is a doubled die reverse variety struck on the distinctive zinc-coated steel planchets used exclusively during 1943, when copper was reserved for wartime ammunition production. The steel cent composition makes 1943 varieties uniquely identifiable by their silvery appearance and magnetic properties. The examining coin was heavily circulated, which limited the observable die markers — a common challenge when cataloging varieties from well-worn specimens. On the reverse, die scratches run southwest from the base of the P in PLURIBUS, and a light die crack is present on the lower right wheat ear. No obverse die markers were noted due to the heavy circulation wear on the examined specimen. The limitation of heavily circulated examination coins means that additional die markers may exist on higher-grade examples that have yet to be documented, and future submissions of better-preserved specimens could expand the diagnostic profile for this variety. Attributed under the Wexler variety designation 1943-S 1 cent WDDR-008, collectors searching for this variety should focus on the reverse for the die scratches near the P in PLURIBUS and the wheat ear crack, while bearing in mind that the full scope of doubling diagnostics may be clearer on less worn examples.
