1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

1943-S WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1943-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Very strong Class VI extra thickness appears on both wheat stems, both upper wheat ears, the dots, the letters of EPU, OF AMERICA, and the ATES of STATES. The obverse is also a minor doubled die, carried in the Wexler Files under 1943-S 1¢ WDDO-002. On Obverse Stage A, concentric scratches sit above IN GOD WE, scratches angle northwest in the space between the forehead and TRUST, and light north-south scratches cross LIBERTY; there is no crack above V.D.B. By Stage B a crack has formed from the rim at 6:00 across the base of the bust and back out to the rim at 7:00, over V.D.B.; the concentric scratches persist, and two parallel scratches rise north from the T of LIBERTY. On Stage C the concentric scratches are weaker but still visible, the 6:00-to-7:00 crack looks the same, and the scratches above the T remain; new are scratches running in several directions under the chin, plus concentric scratches and large gouges around the ear and east of it. Reverse Stage A shows multiple scratches through AMERICA and no crack on the T of CENT. Reverse Stage B adds a SSW-to-NNE scratch below the P of PLURIBUS; a NNW scratch from the upper right of the N in CENT; a scratch heading north through the R of AMERICA, passing between the S and T of STATES, to stop under the N of CENT; a NW-to-SE scratch through the lower C of AMERICA; and clash marks from the E of ONE across to the N of CENT and low between the C and E of CENT. On Reverse Stage C a crack with chips shows at the base of the T in CENT, and the clash marks are essentially polished away. Daniel Griffin submitted Stages A and C, and Al Raddi Stage B. Coppercoins lists it as 1943S-1DR-003 and CONECA as 1-R-VI. Wexler's comments note that this listing first named WDDO-004 as the obverse die; that pairing was wrong, and the obverse die is WDDO-002. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
