1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1943-S WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1943-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The wheat ears, the dots, and E PLURIBUS UNUM show extra thickness. Obverse Stage A: concentric scratches across the neck and jaw; multiple SSE scratches under the RTY of LIBERTY; strong NNW scratches ahead of the forehead and eye; and no cracks at the base of the bust. On Stage B the neck and jaw scratches and those under RTY and before the forehead and eye remain, and two cracks appear: one above VDB and one on the lower right of the bust running SE/NW. On Stage C all of those scratches are still present; a new NNW crack rises above VDB, the crack above VDB now reaches farther east through the base of the bust, and the lower right bust crack is a little stronger. Reverse Stage A: crisscrossing scratches above STATES and above the UNI of UNITED, with no cracks on either wheat ear and no chip on the base of the T in CENT. On Stage B the crisscrossing scratches over STATES and UNI are weaker, a die dot lies SSE of the first U in PLURIBUS, a chip sits on the base of the T in CENT, and two vertical scratches run south at the M of AMERICA. On Stage C the chip at the base of the T has a crack running north up the letter, scratches run northeast through the D of UNITED and the S of STATES, one crack runs southeast from the rim into the left wheat ear, and another runs northwest from the rim into the right wheat ear. Brian Ribar submitted Stages A and B, and John A. Wexler Stage C. CONECA lists it as 3-R-VI.
