1943 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-002

Description

DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1943-S Lincoln wheat cent, with extra thickness along the perimeter lettering of E PLURIBUS UNUM, on its dots and on the right wheat. Wexler lists CONECA 2-R-VI and Coppercoins 1943S-1DR-001; VarietyVista gives no cross-reference. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the extra thickness nice, placing it around the perimeter: on the right wheat, the dots and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Daniel Griffin submitted both of its stages. In stage A the obverse has concentric scratches all through IN GOD WE TRUST, several roughly vertical scratches through and above the TY of LIBERTY, more of them beneath the ERTY, and a crack crossing the base of the bust from west to east. Stage B pairs the reverse with a new obverse die, which shows heavy crisscrossing scratches above the date, north-south scratches through the RTY of LIBERTY, heavy scratches running NNW across the forehead just under the hairline, and vertical scratches just beneath the chin. On the reverse in stage A, Wexler records three gouges above the tip of the left wheat stem; scratches heading northeast from inside the lower part of the C in CENT to its E, and from the base of the N to the T; and a northwest-running scratch linking the O of OF with the U of UNITED. In stage B the three gouges remain, the stage A scratches have worn away, a new gouge sits nearer the right wheat than the T of CENT, between the two, and scratches run SSW below the O of OF. Wexler notes that its entry replaces the original WDDR-001, whose files were indeterminate and suggest it may once have duplicated WDDR-005. VarietyVista, crediting Daniel Griffin and Michael L. Ellis, describes extra thickness on the right wheat, the dots and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Under its marker codes UVC-3460 and DMR-020, stage A shows three small gouges just over the left stem tip in an early die state, several strong gouges through IN GOD WE TRUST in an early-middle state, and a very light crack above V.D.B. Stage B, which it codes UVC-1605 and DMR-016, has the reverse in a middle die state and a changed obverse die, also middle. Stage C, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
