1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1943-01-STAGE-A

Description

ADC-1c-1943-01 Stage A is an atypical die clash on a 1943 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The obverse has only a fairly minor clash, but the reverse records a run of 8 or more. Clashes 1 and 2 are two sets of marks lined up closely with each other, slightly off center by roughly 3-5% toward 10 o'clock and tilted somewhat toward the south side of the reverse die. As the clashing went on, the misalignment faded while the rotation grew. By clash event 8 the dies had turned 38-39 degrees and most of the misalignment, which shifted mainly between clashes 4 and 7, was gone. There may be more clashes: in the final slide, an anomaly in CENT's N resembles Lincoln's neck at clash 8, though not enough to be certain. This obverse was later swapped for a Class IV doubled die obverse with an offset eye to the southeast; the markers of that second die pair agree with CONECA's 1943 DDO-015, and the pairing is listed as ADC-1c-1943-01 Stage B.
