1943-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
ErrorDescription
Brenner's Lincoln portrait, originally sculpted for the centennial of Lincoln's birth in 1909, appears on every Lincoln Cent obverse and provides the primary canvas on which doubled die varieties are detected. On 1943-D steel cents, this portrait was struck onto zinc-coated steel rather than the usual bronze, producing coins with a distinctive silvery appearance that collectors either love or find curious. WDDO-008 records the eighth doubled die obverse from the Denver Mint's 1943 production, adding to what would become one of the largest DDO catalogs for any single date in the Wheat Cent series. The die manufacturing process during wartime operated under accelerated schedules, as the Mint worked to meet enormous circulating coinage demand while simultaneously producing medals and other defense-related items. Such production pressure may have contributed to a higher incidence of hub misalignment. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1943-D 1¢ WDDO-008.
