Description

This is the doubled die obverse of the 1942-D Washington Quarter. The obverse design was impressed into the working die in two slightly different positions, so the die itself carries a doubled image and every coin struck from it shows the same doubling in the same place. The displacement is consistent in direction across the affected elements, and both images are fully formed and rounded. That is what distinguishes a true doubled die from machine doubling, which happens during the strike and leaves a flat shelf with no serifs. A quarter from the Denver Mint, the 1942 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse belongs to the Washington Silver Quarters 1932-1964 series. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with olive branches below. First full year of the war, with quarters struck at all three mints. Some 1942-D coins show weak mint marks. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906.
