Description

Medium extra thickness distinguishes E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat ears on this 1942 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged as DDR-002 (UVC-0133, DMR-014). Four die stages chart the die's progression. Stage A is early die state and remains unconfirmed. Stage B places the reverse in early-to-mid die state, with the obverse listed as RPM-012 also in early-to-mid state, and a die crack developing over the V.D.B. designer initials. Stage C advances to mid-die-state on the reverse, with a die chip forming on the die crack between the V and D of V.D.B. Stage D reaches late die state but is unconfirmed. The co-occurrence of DDR-002 with RPM-012 on the same obverse die means collectors can potentially find both varieties on a single coin, an appealing prospect for cherrypickers. The wartime 1942-S Wheat cent was struck in a copper alloy during the early years of World War II. Hub doubling on the wheat ears and motto produces visible thickening that, combined with the V.D.B. crack progression, gives collectors a multi-layered attribution target.
