1942 (P) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Wartime Silver Alloy - Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

A 1942-P proof Jefferson nickel struck in the wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), DDR-005 is cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-695/DMR-042 and marked silver and proof. Philadelphia struck 27,600 of these silver proofs in 1942, after the copper-nickel proofs earlier in the year. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State. The doubling presents as spread on AMERICA, LLO of MONTICELLO, the right edge of the building facade, and UNUM in E PLURIBUS UNUM — a distribution across both architecture and lettering indicating a broad hub displacement. Doubled die varieties on proofs are notable because enhanced striking pressure and mirror-finish fields make even subtle doubling more visible than on business strikes.
