Description

Tenth doubled die reverse attributed by the Wexler Team for the 1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety carries the designation 1942 1c WDDR-010 with no other known cross-references. Ten documented DDRs from a single date places 1942 among the most productive years for reverse hub varieties in the entire Wheat Cent series, consistent with the massive Philadelphia Mint production volume during America's first full year of World War II. Following the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the Mint operated at maximum capacity to supply circulating coinage for a rapidly expanding wartime economy, consuming die pairs at an accelerated rate and creating proportionally more opportunities for hub alignment errors. The 1942 cent was the last year of standard bronze composition before the emergency 1943 steel cent, adding metallurgical significance to the date. Doubled die reverses form during die manufacture when the hub โ€” the master positive โ€” enters the die blank at slightly different positions on successive impressions, leaving overlapping design elements permanently embedded in the die. Brenner's wheat ears reverse, with its fine botanical detail, thin stems, graceful lettering, and the three-dot separator pattern in E PLURIBUS UNUM, offered abundant elements where even subtle hub displacement produced detectable doubling under magnification.
