1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1533 with die-marriage reference DMR-018, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse exhibits medium spread on BUS of PLURIBUS, UNUM, and the right upper wheat lines. The involvement of both legend text and decorative wheat design confirms a hub-doubling event affecting a significant portion of the reverse die, with spread concentrated in the right-center area. The "medium" classification indicates doubling readily visible under standard magnification, placing this variety within accessible detection range for cherrypickers. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A represents the early die state, where doubling appears at maximum sharpness. Stage B is mid-die state, with confirmation pending. Stage C shows both reverse and obverse in late die state, where accumulated wear may soften the doubled elements. The 1942 Philadelphia Wheat Cent was produced during the last full year of standard bronze composition. Doubled die reverses from this transitional period — just before the 1943 steel cent experiment — occupy a notable position in the Lincoln Cent variety catalog as the final bronze-era DDR entries from Philadelphia.
