1941-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Exhibiting strong Class VI extra thickness on both wheat ears and stems, the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the dots, this 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent variety is one of the more visually prominent doubled die reverses for its date. Class VI doubling results from a distended hub that produces noticeable thickening of design elements without the directional spread seen in other classes. The obverse carries the Small S mint mark variety, a diagnostic that ties this coin to a specific group of San Francisco Mint dies. On the reverse, a die crack runs through the right wheat grains on the right wheat ear and extends to the rim at approximately 4:00, with a die chip found on the crack just before it turns toward the rim. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent reverse was particularly prone to hub doubling on the fine parallel lines of the wheat ears.
