1941 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat ears characterizes this 1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent as DDR-007 in the VarietyVista catalog, with die markers UVC-3357 and DMR-035. The hub misalignment is most apparent where the reverse inscription meets the highest-relief areas of the design — the wheat ear stalks and kernels providing fine detail against which the shifted secondary impression stands out cleanly. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, marked by numerous light die scratches oriented north-to-south across the reverse field; the obverse also enters mid-die state at this stage. Stage C is late die state, currently unconfirmed. The 1941 cent was produced in a prewar year when copper alloy compositions were still standard, one of the last years before the wartime zinc-coated steel planchets of 1943. Collectors examining candidates should focus first on the inscription letters nearest the central axis, where the spread is most concentrated, then check the wheat ears as secondary confirmation under magnification.
