1941 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Produced in the final full year before wartime composition changes transformed the Lincoln Cent series, this third doubled die reverse for the 1941 Philadelphia issue shows extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both wheat ears and stems, and AMERICA. Cataloged under VarietyVista identifiers UVC-1497 and DMR-027, the variety extends doubling beyond the wheat ear heads to include the stems — a broader displacement area than varieties affecting only the grain portions of Brenner's botanical design. The stems provide thin linear elements where hub displacement manifests as widened lines measurable under magnification. Die stage documentation confirms Stage C as late die state, placing surviving specimens in the latter portion of this die's production run. The 1941 cent was struck in standard 95% copper composition, the last full production year before the wartime shift to zinc-coated steel in 1943 and shell-case brass in 1944-45. Philadelphia's massive 1941 output — over 887 million coins — consumed enormous numbers of die pairs, and DMR-027 positions this as the twenty-seventh documented die marriage for its catalog designation.
