1941-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1941-D 50¢ WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse variety on the 1941-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar shows very close splitting on GOD, TRUST, and the heel of the right shoe. Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design is struck in 90% silver and is considered among the most beautiful in American coinage. Obverse die markers are numerous: an east-west die scratch to the left of the upper first 1 in the date; a die scratch from the bottom of the first 1 to the lower curve of the 9; and northeast-southwest die scratches through the lower and center areas of the second 1. The reverse also carries a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 1941-D 50¢ WDDR-001, showing light die scratches south from the eagle's beak and palette area. Walking Liberty Half Dollar doubled die varieties are less commonly encountered than Lincoln cent counterparts, making documented varieties with confirmed markers valuable to specialists in this classic silver series. The heel-of-shoe obverse splitting is visible on well-preserved specimens and serves as a quick preliminary identifier before die marker confirmation.
