1939 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-3469, DMR-022, this 1939 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE, and both wheat ears and stems. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A (EDS) shows numerous die scratches on the reverse and a die clash through the lower C of CENT, with the obverse also in EDS. Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The die clash through the lower C of CENT in Stage A provides a secondary diagnostic alongside the primary doubled die reverse characteristics, indicating this die experienced both hub doubling during manufacture and clash damage during production use. Struck in 95% copper at the Philadelphia Mint on the eve of World War II, the 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent comes from a period of increasing mintages as economic recovery accelerated. The strong extra thickness across multiple reverse design elements makes DDR-011 a visually rewarding variety, with Stage A's combination of die scratches and clash evidence offering the most complete set of diagnostics for attribution.
